sundays.............
sundays are the highlight of my week. first some thanks to a wonderful friend, Rea, from the USA who sent me this book that i have been desperately searching for in South Africa - to no avail. Rea, thank you. you make me believe more and more that Jesus and His promises are REAL and that God truly does only want the best for His children - whether that is the same as what we believe is best, is not always the case- but a Father knows better than a child. thank you for YOU.
these are the reasons i love Sundays. every single Sunday afternoon, from 2:30 pm to 5pm, this is my life. i first feed these little faces and then i make sure they sit as still as any child can, and try and teach them to worship the Lord, wash their hands so they don't catch and spread germs, try and clothe them as properly as we can, and hope that the seeds are falling on fertile ground. i have only missed 4 Sundays in 18 months. i know the reason for everyone. and i am sad every time i miss my appointment. i love these kids. they come from mostly single parent homes, or are foster kids because the fathers are missing and the mothers died of AIDS. most of them live with family members. some of them walk over 5 miles to church every Sunday. barefoot in winter. they are hearing the story of Adam and Eve, David and Goliath and the greatest story of all - that of a Father who sent His only Son to die so that millions of sinners could live, for the first time-some of them when they are older than 13.
our church rents the building from another congregation. we are part of a network of missionary churches in South Africa. these people have no money, and yet they diligently give their 10th. for the first time in my life i understand what the 10th is for and how it blesses me by giving it. i still struggle every month to give my full tenth - sometimes i try and extend it a little ( in case i need it for something) but without fail - as soon as i make the transfer, something miraculous happens! the Lord is truly faithful and He never ceases to amaze me. He has never not come through for me - i have never been so happy as now that i am being obedient. it is not always easy, but it is so worth it!
a close up of some of the kids. one of the most amazing things about these kids, is the fact that their native tongues are Xhosa. our church evangelises in Afrikaans. all these kids learnt the language by themselves. two of the Xhosa mothers speak fluent Afrikaans - they only joined the church 3 years ago and could barely speak Afrikaans, they came from the Transkei. as one said - "God gave me a new language". what a mighty God we serve! Philip Yancey's book asks - " Prayer - does it make any difference?" my answer - in these people's lives a resounding YES. their faith is simple and solid. they do not get confused with modern day ideals and wanna be's. with what is cool and not, real and surreal - if God says He can heal, He will. if they believe, He will come through for them. they do not ask much. a job, a bed, some food and an education for their children so that the cycle of poverty might be broken on earth - but you know what, if it does not get broken in monetary terms, it is ok, for they have accumulated wealth beyond measure where it matters - they know they will see Jesus. if there are any good samaritans out there - we are in desperate need of warm clothing, sponsorships for school fees and bursaries, some help with the feeding project and basic housewares. we are registered as an NPO ( for the South Africans) so you can claim any donations back from tax. i am not asking for help, but i thought i would let you share in a small way in what is important to me. i hope you all have a good week. God bless!!!!
