just another day in Africa
well, i got home just now, and as i sat down at the computer in the study, saw some movement by the pool. what a little bugger!! this little puffadder had grabbed himself a nice, juicy BULL FROG, and was trying his best to kill it and swallow it. it was so pre-occupied with the frog, it took no notice of me - even as i came within 2 feet to take a good picture. when the dogs arrived on the scene (they just looked - useless creatures!!!) he grabbed his snack, got into the pool and swam to the other side with his loot!! it was a better spot, i guess - shade and all!! just for those who don't know - This species is responsible for more fatalities than any other other African snake. This is due to a combination of factors, including its wide distribution, common occurrence, large size, potent venom that is produced in large amounts, long fangs that inject it deeply, their reliance on camouflage which makes these snakes reluctant to flee, their habit of basking by footpaths and sitting quietly when approached, and their willingness to bite. SO, be glad you don't have these babies on your doorstep!!! you can read more about these interesting snakes here
